In our hometown, it feels as though Fall has arrived. With colder weather comes more time spent inside and for us, the process of decluttering our home again.
Here are the questions I ask myself as I evaluate my home:
Does my home feel cluttered?
Have I used the things I look at each day?
Should I consider living with less?
I don’t consider myself a minimalist, but I aspire to be one. I don’t like to keep things around the house that our family does not use. I like to make sure the items we bring into our home have a purpose and provide us happiness. I also believe that the less we own, the more value the things we keep mean to us.
Mrs. Doughmaker and I also use this time before the holidays to get rid of the toys my children have outgrown. We involve them in the process so they don’t feel like we’re taking their things without their input.
If we take a moment to set up our winter months for success it may pay us dividends in the future. Following a process will keep you focused and from feeling overwhelmed.
Make a Plan
Don’t wait until the weekend to determine you have nothing better to do. A few days in advance, clear time in your schedule and set expectations for what you want to accomplish. Clean out the garage? Organize the attic? Sort through your clothing? Pick a project and prepare for it as needed.
Check the Weather
Hoping to get your yard cleaned up? Make sure you check the weather a few days before hand and keep an eye on it. Bad weather can quickly derail an outdoor project.
Find Items You are Willing to Part With
We all have things taking up space in our homes. Consider finding a new home for them. Whether it’s dropping them off at your local donation center or selling on a marketplace like Facebook or Craigslist, removing them from your home will most likely provide a sense of relief.
Do the Work!
Be intentional with your time and remind yourself of your goals. A few hours of work now will can amount to a feeling of relief and peace within your home.
